You should be reading: First Love [Manga Edition]

Happy Sunday Bookworms!

Let me start by thanking Mary Helen for mention A Novel Idea in her blog post: 12 Top Notch Book Blogs

It was so touching to see that people enjoy my content <3

Mary Helen is a debut author with her first Women’s Fiction book, Boop and Eve’s Road Trip, coming out in late 2020. Not to mention, she has a great guide on her website called Literary Care Package that helps with gift giving for those of us that like to gift books!

You Should Be Reading is something I’ve been thinking about for a while. It will be a segment that goes over my book recommendations to you! I plan to post one of these every month at the moment but that can change later on.

Each post will be centered on a theme and will work similarly to the If You Liked This, Read That book tag (a tag I saw BaeCrate do on their insta-story and is known in the Booktube world).

Rules for the post:

  1. Pick a Theme/Genre of book of something you have in your book shelf
  2. Recommend 3-5 books that fall within the theme/genre you chose
  3. Highlight a favorite recommendation
  4. Tag a friend/friends
  5. Link back to the original post

Theme: First Love [Manga Edition]

Authors: Karuho, Shiina
Genres: Romance, School, Shoujo, Slice of Life
Original Run: May 25, 2006 – November 13, 2017
Volumes: 30

  1. Kimi Ni Todoke: Known for being one of the bests in it’s genre, Kimi Ni Todoke takes us on slow and steady romance adventure with Sawako. Sawako has been misunderstood by her peers due to her resemblance to Sadako, the girl from the Ring, prompting rumors that she curses people and can see ghosts. In reality, she is a quiet and sweet girl who wants nothing but to be helpful. Being shunned for so long, making friends is such a foreign concept to her, but when popular guy Kazehaya starts talking to her…things start to slowly open up. Get ready for all the feels and butterflies! This Manga is full of that sappy sweet feeling.

Author: Yukimaru, Moe
Genres: Romance, School, Shoujo, Slice of Life
Original Run: Nov 2, 2009 to Nov 1, 2014
Volumes: 14

2. Hiyokoi: An incredibly sweet story about a small chick-like girl and a tall guy that’s sure to give you cinnamon roll feels! Due to a horrible accident, Hiyori’s growth was stunted. She spent a whole year out of school and is now embarking on her highschool life! She is anxious and scared of such a big change, especially when her seat neighbor is the incredibly tall Hirose. Everyone gravitates toward him and Hiyori begins to wonder if she can fit in like he does. Seriously, you’ll probably have to take breaks due to possible diabetes.

Author: Sakisaka, Io
Genres: Romance, School, Shoujo, Slice of Life
Original Run: January 13 2011 –  February 13 2015
Volumes: 13

3. Ao Haru Ride: This one is a little more dramatic than the last two but the story is just as sweet. Futaba is a 17 year old highschooler who is trying to fit in with her female friends after having a history of being mocked for not being feminine. Due to that, she feels like her life is uninteresting. That is, until she runs into her childhood friend, who has drastically changed over the years.

Favorite Recommendation: Kimi Ni Todoke

Sporting the slow burn + friends to lovers troupes, Kimi Ni Todoke is my favorite out of the one’s I’ve mentioned. It’s a sweet story that takes you through the experiences of a socially awkward girl who learns to slowly come out of her shell and a boy who sees her for whom she is from the beginning. It’s light-hearted and so mushy, you’ll be smiling from cheek to cheek. Like all first-love stories, there are many hurdles the two must pass and you find yourself rooting for both characters in their self discovery and love.

Since not everyone reads Manga, I’m tagging the following amazing people for just First Love <3

Thanks for the mention above. I’ve actually never read any Manga. Perhaps it is time I broadened my horizons!
