The ‘What Makes Me Pick Up a Book’ Tag

The ‘What Makes Me Pick Up a Book’ Tag was found on The Strawberry Post while blog hopping.

Hello bookworks! Happy Saturday!

I’ve been amassing book tags for the better part of the last week or two. I’ve hit a point in where I’m not reading as much as I should be thanks to work and other things taking up my time. I feel like I’m at the cusps of another reading slump and I’m trying my hardest to not fall into a third one.

I don’t know what it is with me this year…but reading frequently has been a challenge.

With that said if you guys have any short novels you recommend, feel free to let me know in the comments!

The ‘What Makes Me Pick Up a Book’ Tag

1. Do you judge a book by its cover?

Not entirely but it’s definitely in the decision process. I can’t sit here and lie that I don’t go for pretty looking covers first.

My current process of deciding if I want to read a book is:

Cover > Excerpt > First couple of pages
If two of the three fail, I leave it be.

2. Focusing on just the cover, what attracts you to pick it up?

Contrast and Saturation then Style. I enjoy having books with colors that POP, colors that catch the eye and are well-placed against each other. Style is also a big thing for me. Illustrated covers, covers that are mixed media or simple covers with nice color contrast are my favorites.

3. Do you read the synopsis first, or do you prefer to go in knowing nothing about the book?

I read the synopsis second. I like to know what I’m in for.

4. Do you have any auto-buy authors?

There are a couple of authors who I don’t question because they have released great book after great book.

5. Are you more likely to buy a book if it has specific elements/themes?

I would like to think I don’t but then I’d be a big fat liar….I’m really big into Enemies to Lovers/ Villain Love Interest in a Fantasy setting. Preferably, a reluctant heroine who grows to accept her fate and realizes she has to sacrifice everything for the people she loves.

6. Do you ever read a book that has generally negative reviews just to form your own opinion on it?

I always do. Just because a book didnt connect with the reviewer doesn’t mean it wont connect with me. And Vice Versa. There are some books that I absolutely loved that had horrible reviews and there are some books that I disliked that many have raved about.

7. Do you ever buy a book just because another booktuber/blogger has talked about it a lot?

Yep! Especially if it’s from one of my favorite book bloggers. There are certain bloggers whose opinion I value the most, and they haven’t been wrong yet. I’ve loved every book they have recommended. 🙂

8. Is there anyone who’s book recommendations you always trust?

SAM | CLO | Umairah

  1. Ohhh, I kinda like this tag! I may go ahead and steal it to post soon :p

Marie @ Drizzles & Hurricanes and Sophie @ Beware of the Readers are two bloggers that I found has a similar taste to mine; thus their reviews help me LOTS — although I don’t specifically read reviews before reading the book … a bad review as no real impact on my choice, as I tend to like a book having quite a negative rating anyway XD But it did made me question wether I wanted to read Emergency Contact or not.. which I ended up buying it anyway after Marie’s review.

One of my favorite element in a book is definately Organ Donation, as it’s already part of something I’ve been through with my mom, or anything involving geeky things & if there’s a dachshund in it – it’s always a bonus!

      Do itttttt!!!!

Marie @ Drizzles and Hurricanes is also a favorite of mine! Her reviews and how to’s/discussions are so helpful. I admire her because you can tell she puts WORK into those posts.

I don’t think I’ve ever read something with that element in it. And now that I’m thinking about it, I dont think it’s ever even crossed my mind…wow…the things you dont look for when you havent experience them (I’m sorry you and your mom had to go through that, must’ve been so stressful). Do you have any recs?
Geeky things are always a plus in my eyes. Well Met was literally the book I never knew I needed. LARPING? Ingenious. My geek self was singing!
DACHSUNDS ARE PRECIOUS!!! How are Kaffei and Sheik?

      1. I do! I’ve personally read « The heart between us », but there’s a few ones i’ve seen too.. most involving hearts, but the ONE that had involved kidney like us was « our year of maybe », which i’ve seen on the blogosphere before! Haven’t gotten to that one yet.

Ohh I have well met on my shelf, so that’s good to know!!
Kafei and sheik is doing well ☺️ a lazy butt with his sister as energic as ever.. ahaha she keep us going for the both of them!

  2. Great post and I love your answers 🙂 I have to agree, I love it when a villain is a love interest 🙂

    1. Jeimy says:

      Thank you <3!

I'm complete trash for a villain love interest. COMPLETE TRASH.

  3. Great post! I’ll be honest, I do often judge books by their cover haha 🙂

    1. Jeimy says:

      Thank you!

A cover is very important because it’s the first thing people see. Prettier covers have a higher rate of pickup and it’s so disappointing when the story is no good D:

      Thank you for reading <3
